Punta La Bandera – Luquillo

Punta La Bandera - Luquillo

You can easily spend a day or two at the various beaches in Luquillo.  Punta La Bandera is a semi-private beach a short walk from the public beach, Playa Azul.  You will park near Playa Azul and follow the beach north and around the corner to the west.  Its only a 5-10 walk from Playa Azul.  This area is generally not as busy, and feels more private with beautiful Atlantic views and nice walks up and down the beach. The QR code will direct you to Playa Azul, but you can drive a bit farther north on Calle Luquillo Beach Blvd to find parking closer to Punta La Bandera.

🌴 Discover Cayo Icacos Near Fajardo

Cayo Icacos is one of the most beautiful island escapes in Puerto Rico, known for its crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand, and peaceful natural setting. Located off the coast of Fajardo, this small uninhabited cay is part of the La Cordillera Nature Reserve and is only accessible by boat or water taxi.

If you’re looking for a beach day that feels more remote and unforgettable than the typical mainland beach experience, Cayo Icacos is a must-visit.

🌊 Why Visit Cayo Icacos

  • Stunning clear water and white-sand shoreline
  • Boat-access-only experience that feels exclusive
  • Great for swimming, relaxing, and snorkeling
  • Popular day trip from Fajardo
  • Natural, undeveloped island setting

Cayo Icacos is a small, uninhabited island off Fajardo and is part of the La Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve, making it one of the most scenic and protected beach destinations in the area. The FerTex page also notes that it’s about a 15-minute water taxi ride from Fajardo.

🐠 Swimming & Snorkeling at Cayo Icacos

Cayo Icacos is a favorite for calm-water swimming and snorkeling.

  • Clear water makes it ideal for enjoying the shoreline
  • Reef and marine life nearby make it a great stop for snorkeling
  • Excellent for a laid-back beach day with friends, couples, or family

Because Icacos is reached by boat, the experience feels more like a true island excursion than a standard beach stop. Its natural setting and protected waters are a big part of the appeal.

🧭 What to Expect

  • No hotels or major development on the island
  • Boat or water taxi required to visit
  • Bring your own essentials for the day
  • Beautiful open shoreline and clear Caribbean water

Since Cayo Icacos is uninhabited, visitors should plan ahead and bring what they need for a comfortable beach day. The page describes it as a small, uninhabited island under environmental jurisdiction, which supports that more natural, undeveloped experience.

👨‍👩‍👧 Who It’s Best For

  • Couples looking for a romantic day trip
  • Travelers who want a more exclusive beach experience
  • Visitors staying in Fajardo or on Puerto Rico’s east coast
  • Anyone who loves boating, snorkeling, or island-hopping

⚠️ Tips for Visiting Cayo Icacos

  • Book your water taxi or boat tour in advance
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen
  • Pack water, snacks, and shade if needed
  • Wear sandals or water shoes for easy beach access
  • Go early for the most relaxing experience

Since access is by water taxi from Fajardo, planning ahead is key. The current page specifically highlights water taxi access and tags the destination with “boat,” “Icacos,” and “water taxi.”

📍 How to Get to Cayo Icacos

Cayo Icacos is located off the coast of Fajardo on Puerto Rico’s east side.

  • Reach Fajardo by car from San Juan
  • Take a water taxi or boat excursion from the Fajardo area
  • Travel time from shore is about 15 minutes by water taxi, according to the current FerTex page

This makes Icacos one of the easiest offshore island experiences for travelers staying on the east coast.

North Coast Roadtrip - Dorado to Arecibo

North Coast Roadtrip – Dorado to Arecibo

What to see

Dorado is home to the wealthiest Puerto Ricans and has some excellent restaurants as well as nice beaches and a lovely Plaza.  Further along the drive you can experience rocky beaches and limestone cliffs.  Make sure your camera is ready as the scenery is begging to be photographed.  Be sure to bring hiking shoes and use care when climbing the limestone cliffs.  Some areas are not for beginners or the faint of heart!

Time

Without traffic or stops, the drive is 90 minutes to 2 hours.  But I would plan on 6 hours to a full day to get the most out of this trip.  I do recommend stopping at Bocata for excellent Mojitos and BBQ!

Notes

Traffic can be very heavy on weekends & holidays.  It is a popular destination for locals and visitors. The drive ends in Arecibo area where there are some wonderful restaurants to enjoy dinner.  From here, you can take Highway 22 back towards San Juan or your home.

Southern Central Coastal Roadtrip - Caguas to Ponce

Southern Central Coastal Roadtrip – Caguas to Ponce

What to see

This drive commences in Caguas on Highway 52 (just south of San Juan in the middle of the island).  This drive gives you a taste of the mountains that run through the center of the island.  Once you reach the coast, you will head west to Ponce.  Ponce, the second most populous city in Puerto Rico, is rich with Spanish architecture and history.  Check out the stops on the map, and spend some time walking around the Plaza.

Time

The drive itself is about 90 minutes, but I recommend planning on a full day for this trip.  You could get started with Breakfast or Brunch at Siempre Verde and finish your day with a decadent meal in Ponce.

Notes

Traffic can be heavy near the tourist attractions on the weekends and holidays, and parking may be more difficult. This tour ends in Ponce.  You can follow the map back to Highway 52 to reach San Juan or your home.
