Playa Caracas, also known as Red Beach, is a beautiful stop on Vieques, Puerto Rico. Below are Vincent’s firsthand memories, our beach photographs, and practical tips to help you plan an island visit.

Vincent’s visit to Playa Caracas

To get the most out of your Puerto Rico experience, take an overnight trip to Vieques, a small island off the east coast of the main island.  Rent a car or golf cart to drive around and explore the pure beaches on this paradise within paradise!  Playa Caracas was our favorite because of the views, wild horses, and covered patios with picnic tables and grills.  You and your family could easily spend the day at this location.  Bring food and drink so you don’t have a reason to leave this bit of paradise. 

Planning your Playa Caracas beach day

Make Vieques a separate part of your Puerto Rico itinerary, with time for the journey and your beach visit. An overnight stay gives you more flexibility than trying to fit everything around a same-day return. Decide how you will travel to Vieques, then arrange transport on the island before you set out. Getting to the beach

Playa Caracas is within the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Check the official refuge visitor information for access details, directions, and current notices. Follow designated public roads and posted signs; a map pin alone does not confirm that an entrance or route is open.

What to bring and what to expect

Pack drinking water, a picnic, towels, sun protection, and a bag for taking your rubbish away. Vincent enjoyed the picnic areas during his visit; plan to be self-sufficient rather than relying on food vendors or a particular facility being available. Give wildlife space and keep your group together. Choose your activities to suit the conditions when you arrive, with time to enjoy the scenery as well as the water.
